This talk demonstrates an early case history representing potentially one of the first examples where FWI velocity model building has proven successful in significantly modifying salt body geometries from streamer seismic data. The unique combination of a mature starting velocity model, applying smoothing to prior estimates of the salt boundaries, implementing a time-domain FWI approach, and finally imaging using EWATS (extended wide-azimuth towed streamer) seismic data were the innovative elements needed to overcome some of the major imaging challenges in our study area. This in turn led to better subsalt seismic images that were used to impact major decisions over the course of an exploration and appraisal drilling project. Prior to this, FWI was used largely for improving sediment velocity models but with limited efficacy for updating salt. Since this study, which was completed in 2016, FWI has now become a commonplace industrial technique widely utilized for imaging seismic data across the world, but especially in salt basins.
