Honoring: Tom Smith, President and CEO, Geophysical Insights
GSH 2026 Symposium Program Booklet
Over the past thirty years, applied geophysics in the oil and gas industry has undergone a series of innovation pivots that fundamentally retooled the practicing geophysicist and reshaped how we do business. This symposium reviews technical advances that moved interpretation (structural, stratigraphic, and quantitative) from centralized, high-cost computing to interactive, interpreter-driven approach and, more recently, to scalable, data-intensive environments.
Key developments include cost-effective PC-based seismic workstations that placed interpretation directly in the hands of geophysicists; maturation of seismic supported by wide-azimuth acquisition, depth imaging, and improved velocity model building; and integration of AI/ML, cloud computing, and high-density sensing such as fiber-optics.
These breakthroughs have expanded technical capability, accelerated interpretation, reduced uncertainty, and fundamentally changed how geophysicists operate and make business decisions.
Join us in honoring Tom Smith, a distinguished geophysicist whose career spans 55 years starting at Chevron and moving to his current venture Geophysical Insights, which he founded in 2008. Tom has held pivotal roles, including:
Research and Innovations:
Launch KINGDOM software in 1984- Interpretation platform
Launched Geophysical Insights 2009- Neural network technology
Career and Achievements in Geophysics:
GSH Honorary member 2010, GSH Corporate Star 2005
SEG Enterprise award 2000, HGS Living Legend 2016
Citation of Merit: Iowa State 2002
Distinguished Alumni Award UH 2017
Distinguished Alumni Award Iowa 1996 & 2015
Leadership and Community Contributions:
Served as SEG Foundation chairman 2010-2013
200+ software grants to Universities world wide
Tom and Evonne served as Governors for “Forever True, Iowa State” 2016-2024
4 Sessions including Technical Presentations and Panel Discussions:
- Current state of Geophysics and how it impacts business
- Innovations in Geophysics - Acquisition, Processing, and Interpretation
- Impact of AI/ML on Geophysical Analysis
- 2026 and Beyond: What about Geophysics and Geophysicists?
Each session will feature expert presentations followed by interactive panel discussions, providing a comprehensive look at the state of geophysics today and its potential for tomorrow.
