Speaker: Dr. Stephen Arrowsmith, Huffington Dept of Earth Sciences, Southern Methodist University

Building robust catalogs of events is an important task in seismology, and in the growing field of infrasound science. In this talk, I will explore the challenges of detecting and locating impulsive events like earthquakes using both types of data. I will explore how new types of seismic network require us to revisit standard methods for building event catalogs and discuss the unique challenges of the atmosphere for infrasound detection and location. Finally, I will explore the importance of full probabilistic methods for combining both types of data for the joint inversion of event parameters

Speaker Biography: Dr. Stephen Arrowsmith, Huffington Dept of Earth Sciences, Southern Methodist University
Stephen Arrowsmith (PhD 2004, University of Leeds, UK) is currently Associate Professor and Hamilton Chair of Earth Sciences at Southern Methodist University. He has 15 years of experience in research in seismology, with a particular emphasis on the use of seismic and acoustic data for national security applications. Before moving to SMU in 2019, he worked at Sandia National Laboratories and at Los Alamos National Laboratories on a range of research problems. Many of the most significant discoveries in Geophysics, including those relevant to explosion monitoring, have been based on relatively small numbers of observations, simplifying analytical models, and the separate analysis of different phenomenologies. Stephen is interested in how the emergence of new types and volumes of data, as well as constant improvements in high performance computing, can be leveraged for both practical and fundamental goals.
