The available seismic data often do not provide a resolution that allows for precise landing points and lateral control when drilling horizontal wells. Moreover, subtle stratigraphic and structural features are often not properly imaged by the available seismic data due to resolution limits. These features are sometimes important to understand for supporting well planning and avoiding drilling hazards. This study demonstrates how ConocoPhillips uses an in-house proprietary technology to improve seismic resolution for supporting landing zones, hazard determination, and attribute extractions for reservoir quality mapping and distribution. The methodology, Seismic Super Resolution (SSR), is described as a post-imaging inversion which is inspired by super resolution techniques from computer vision. These improvements can be achieved without any requirement for re-acquisition or complete re-processing. The ability to leverage 3D seismic information in this study is shown to be beneficial for field development planning and execution.
