Abstract:
During recent acquisition tests in Egypt, Khalda Petroleum Company
recorded a 2D test line on which paired bunched geophone groups were
deployed. The distance between the geophone groups within the pair was 5
m. The station interval (distance between two pairs) was 50 m and the
shot interval was 50 m.
It was envisaged that using these pairs could help with noise
attenuation and interpolation, and could allow for larger station
intervals. Ultimately, this may be translated to 3D acquisitions with
larger distances between receiver lines, which could reduce acquisition
costs.
Extensive processing tests showed the following: 1) Interpolation after
noise attenuation gave better results than before noise attenuation; 2)
The best noise attenuation results were obtained using a workflow that
includes a method that uses the pairs of geophone groups to estimate the
ground roll; 3) The best interpolation results were obtained using 3D
time-domain Radon interpolation (TDRI); 4) Interpolation using TDRI does
not benefit from having pairs of geophone groups, although the more
conventional matching pursuit Fourier interpolation did benefit from
having pairs, and 5) Decimation leads to a gradual reduction in data
quality which will need to be balanced against cost.
Speaker Biography: Dennis Yanchak, Apache Corporation
Dennis Yanchak is currently a Senior Geoscience
Advisor for Apache Corporation based in Houston, TX. He has over 30
years of industry experience and is a member of the GSH, SEG, AAPG,
EAGE, and SPE. His educational background includes and MS in physics
from Carnegie-Mellon University as well as undergraduate degrees in
physics and mathematics and an MBA in technology management.
Dennis began his career in the oil business in
1977 with Gulf R&D near Pittsburgh, PA, working on seismic imaging
of complex structures. In 1985 he joined Amoco, working in their
International Technology Group in Houston. Within Amoco and BP, he
worked around the world in exploration, development, and production;
both land and marine. His experiences cover domestic assignments in
Denver working production in the overthrust and in Houston working in
imaging R&D and Gulf of Mexico Deepwater exploration.
Internationally, Dennis was Chief Geophysicist in Cairo, Egypt for
Amoco/GUPCO and more recently Senior Advisor in TNK-BP based in Moscow,
Russia.
