Speaker: Nicola Tisato, Dept of Geological Sciences, Jackson School of Geosciences, UT Austin

Recent development in numerical modeling and the large availability of X-ray computed tomography has boosted digital rock physics. On the other hand, low-frequency elastic moduli and the attenuation of seismic waves remain hot topics that can help improve geophysical models. Here I will present recently published results combining laboratory measurements of elastic properties and segmentation-less digital rock physics, illustrating the potentiality and the limitations of such methods to help improve rock physics models.

Speaker Biography: Nicola Tisato, Dept of Geological Sciences, Jackson School of Geosciences, UT Austin
Nicola Tisato is an experimental rock physicist focusing on poroelasticity, low-frequency elastic properties and attenuation, earthquakes, and new methods to improve rock physics models. Since 2016, he has been an assistant professor at the Department of Geological Sciences – Jackson School of Geoscience UT Austin, where he is the principal investigator of the Rock Deformation Laboratory. In 2013, under the supervision of Dr. Burlini and Dr. Burg (ETH Zurich), Nicola received his Ph.D. concerning the attenuation of seismic waves in saturated rocks. Nicola has an M.Sc. from the University of Padova (supervisor Prof. Di Toro), and in 2014-2015 he was a post-doc at the University of Toronto (supervisor Prof. Grasselli).
