Source rocks are generally low porosity, permeability and very complex in mineralogy.  The complex mineralogy of these source rocks is attributed to depositional setting and influence of both clastic and carbonate environments in highly alternating sequences of these stratigraphy. Development of such complex rocks requires detailed understanding for various elements. While seismic data provide spatial and vertical description of the elastic properties for these reservoirs, rock physics based lithological classification provides information about the description of reservoir properties and understanding for its complexities.  Identification and definition of rock type or elastic facies are crucial, as it help to break down the mineralogical complexities into relatively simple units. Rock physics analysis of different minerals and their effect of elastic properties determines the major load bearing elements within a complex sequence. This process helps to build different rock physics models suitable for these different units. Bayesian inverse problem formulation is used to estimate lithology description from seismic inversion.  This process not only provides description of maximum aposteriori estimate facies but also provide associated probabilities for the facies and other facies. The spatial distribution of these probabilities provides detailed knowledge of the variability of these different lithofacies before drilling and reduce uncertainty in well placement and horizontal well trajectories. It also provides information about fracture containment by adjacent competent units.

Speaker: Sagnik Dasgupta, Schlumberger

Sagnik Dasgupta is a Senior rock physicist with Schlumberger (Houston, Texas, USA). He is working with Schlumberger for last 16 years, while in the field of rock physics for last 14 years. In this job he was worked in different projects both onshore and offshore from China, Malaysia, India to Kuwait, Nigeria, Egypt, Argentina and presently working on different projects in US, Canada, Mexico for last 10 years. He received his M.Sc. and M.Tech. degree in geosciences from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (India). His main interests are rock physics, petrophysics, geophysics and geomechanics, bringing different data from different discipline to understanding the behavior of rocks. He has published several papers in different geophysical societies and active member of SEG and GSH.
