Anisotropy parameters Epsilon, Gamma, and Delta in TI mudrocks have been measured in multiple labs and presented in multiple papers. Some of those measurements do not adhere to the know-how established by Dellinger and Vernik (1994), allowing to avoid inaccuracies in estimating Delta related to the group vs. phase velocity uncertainty. These inaccuracies are quite significant in highly anisotropic organic mudrocks - the main targets in many unconventional settings - and may lead to inaccuracies in 1D and 2D synthetics as well as simultaneous impedance inversion of 3D seismic data.

I'm going to show a database of measurements that were subject to the Dellinger-Vernik rule and, using cross-plots, study the relationships between Delta and Epsilon and Gamma and Epsilon. In addition, I'm going to show how the currently available and future measurements of TI parameters can be constrained using theoretical bounds given by the Postma inequality for layered TI media and the Schonberg Linear Slip model.

Speaker Biography: Lev Vernik, Seismic Petrophysics
Lev Vernik is a geophysics consultant and owner of Seismic  Petrophysics, LLC, in Houston, Texas, and a research professor of  geophysics at the University of Houston. He has held various geoscience positions with major oil and gas companies, focusing on seismic petrophysics, AVO modeling/analysis, prestack seismic inversion, and geomechanics. Dr. Vernik's new book is Seismic Petrophysics in Quantitative Interpretation. Lev Vernik has been working with Ikon Science to add rock physics modules for unconventionals resources (from Chapters 6-8) into RokDoc and teaches ‘Seismic Petrophysics and Geomechanics of Unconventional Shales’ .
