The Poorman’s Guide to Depth-calibrating Seismic Data in the Presence of Allochthonous Salt  by Adam Niven Shumaker
It is a well known problem that depths from isotropic PSDM data generally do not match well depths. This often leads to problems using such data for well planning and resource estimation. In this talk we demonstrate the fundamental limitations of isotropic velocity analysis and how it relates to depth errors. We also demonstrate methods to correct these types of errors.

Adam Niven Shumaker is a geophysicist for Noble Energy Inc. in Houston where he is currently working on a development project in the Bohai Bay, China. Niven has had experience working the in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico and West Africa Business units as part of a new hire rotation program and is developing expertise in fluid pressure prediction. Prior to working at Noble Energy, Niven began his career working in the New Ventures group at Vintage Petroleum in Tulsa, OK.

GSH K-12 OUTREACH VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES by Lisa Buckner – Outreach Committee Chairperson
The GSH Outreach Committee is looking for volunteers for several projects inside and outside the classroom. Are you interested in giving a classroom or career day presentation to a local school? We want to develop lists of interested volunteers based on school grade level of interest and/or school location. We also need help outside of the classroom. To read the entire article click here

The GSH Website has a new combined calendar that shows all future events for the GSH, the HGS and the Gulf Coast Section of the SPE.

The Houston Energy Council and the Engineering, Science and Technology Council of Houston also have new combined calendars. For the moment, they are identical to the GSH combined calendar, but they can add details for their members and even for non-members.

President’s Column :
by Glenn Bear, Editor

Are You Keeping Busy?

I continue to be impressed by the quality of the technical programs offered by the Geophysical Society of Houston. The technical breakfasts and the monthly luncheons (on the west side of Houston and downtown) are consistently worth the time and effort to attend. The various Special Interest Groups (Data Processing, Rock Physics, Potential Fields, and Multi-Component) routinely provide excellent speakers that dig a bit deeper into the technical issues we all handle on a daily basis. The annual Spring  Symposium has been a huge success largely because of the highquality technical work  being presented there. These events are publicized via the monthly GSH Newsletter and the GSH Website. Technical breakfasts and SIG meetings are free! GSH members and non-members are welcome at these events (What a DEAL!). The technical lunches and the Spring Symposium are available at a modest cost. One of the benefits of GSH membership is a reduction in the cost of attending these flagship technical events. GSH Membership is still just $30 / year!

AN EXCEITING CAREER and MONEY This is intended for those college students who are deciding on a career path, but you long-timers can read it too. Unfortunately, very few of the college students will be reading the GSH NEWSLETTER, because our membership are mostly working professionals, so your assignment is to pass this Newsletter to college more
